Read All About It!

Portals Look who's in the news this month! Yep, that's right; we got our mugs in the paper, recognition for the work we've put in to our stretching the web® brand. The premise of the business section in the Evening Post this week was effective marketing and how promoting your business and your brand leads to increased sales and ultimately business success. One of the articles highlighted Virgin and the value Richard Branson placed on marketing and publicity to establish it as one of the worlds most recognised brands today, a worthy support act to the piece on SpiderGroup as we righteously claim the front cover with stretching the web®.

The article exposes a rare and privileged interview with Paul Griffiths, the manager and evangelist of our flagship product; spider office™. Paul delivers the key messages for the product and describes the activity and commitment we put into delivering those messages to our potential customers. Superb publicity for SpiderGroup in itself, it’s hardly surprising that I weaseled myself into the shot for good measure! To see what Paul has to say click here

Buzz from the Board

2007 has been a very important year for SpiderGroup, we have made significant progress in many areas of the business, the highlight being the launch of spider office™ to the market and experiencing very positive reaction and adoption. We have completed two key products for our telecoms division in SpiderEducation and SpiderMax OCS Gateway, we anticipate a bright future for this niche division in delivering real value to people investing in communications technology. To allow us to properly support the growth expected from our market push, we have put a significant amount of time and effort into making improvements to our internal systems and processes to allow us to cope with rapid expansion of our client base in 2008. The future is looking very exciting and I wish everyone great prosperity in the coming year!

A Better Experience with Office 2007?

It seems at some point the guys at Microsoft decided that the features in their applications were not being used because the average person couldn’t find them, and they decided to do something about it. The aim was to make their features more discoverable and try to eliminate unnecessary clicking, generally making their applications easier to use.

The main difference between Office 2007 and older versions is that of the ‘Ribbon Bar'. In case you haven’t had a chance to see the ribbon bar it is a replacement of the menu bar and tool bar that sit at the top of the window. “But why change something that has been working for years and is standard across all windows apps!?” Continued

Web Portals: Changing Business - Part 1

In my last piece about web portals I gave a brief introduction into what they are and some examples of how they can be applied in various business situations, if you haven’t read this then don’t worry, I’ll provide a bit of background before I begin.

Web portals are places on the internet where you can share information with other people in a secure and structured environment. They can be as simple or advanced as you need them to be and provide real benefits to small, medium and corporate enterprises by centralising business information, keeping it safe and backed up automatically and allowing people to access information and tools from anywhere in the world over the internet.

Portals are a means of bringing people together and businesses will often have a separate portal for each of their stakeholders, for instance a client portal for the delivery of information and services to their customers or a company portal to improve collaboration and knowledge sharing within the organisation. Web technology is extremely flexible and if implemented correctly, a portal can be the solution to any information management or communication limitations you have in your organisation, the trick is identifying what these limitations are in the first place. Showcasing: Achieving the Difference

Achieving the Difference is a partnership of marketing practitioners, delivering work to clients in the UK and overseas. In order to improve process efficiency in a largely remote-working and collaborative environment, and to steal a march on competitors in terms of client project management and bid capability, they turned to SpiderGroup for a technical solution that would support those goals.
Achieving the Difference
The answer was SpiderGroup’s spider office™ a hosted email, web and business portal service that provided an access-from-anywhere corporate desktop, advanced file sharing and document control, as well as virtual team and client rooms – password protected collaborative workspace for team and customer access to specific project documentation and workflow. Add to this the ability to share calendars, contacts and tasks online, and Achieving the Difference have a system that really does make a difference.

According to Managing Partner Clive Lewis, the spider office™ has revolutionised the way Achieving the Difference is able to work:

“By keeping all critical company documents in a shared workspace, we have instant access to key data from wherever we are working, via a simple web browser. Pulling together expert teams to solve client problems is now faster, more cost-effective and easier to manage; in fact, we recently secured a large contract with a district council that involved integrating multiple expert input from six different practitioners. We pulled the winning bid together in record time and without having to meet face-to-face, all achieved ‘virtually’ in real-time, online. What’s more, when one of our partners recently moved to Spain, we were able to continue with business as usual thanks to spider office™, Spanish broadband and some inexpensive webcams. SpiderGroup talk about energising IT for business, and that’s exactly what they’ve done for us.”.

Customer: "No. I can't get behind the computer."

Customer: "OK!"
Tech Support: "Did the keyboard come with you?"
Customer: "Yes"
Tech Support: "That means the keyboard is not plugged in. Is there another keyboard?"
Customer: "Yes, there's another one here. Ah...that one does work... "

Project Management for Donkeys, Mobile Email and Me and Larry takes up golf

Larry's had a Party

It was Friday, a day just like any other day except that this Friday Larry woke up to a world of pain, suffering and regret!

Thoughts that he was being horribly tortured by savages were dashed aside as it became apparent that he was experiencing a terrible hangover, born of excessive alcohol consumption the night before, at the Christmas Party! Groaning at this cruel turn of fate, Larry’s years of training took over, closing windows, drawing curtains and administering medication with minimal effort, instinctively following the path of least resistance like a professional.

Before he knew it he was dressed and out the door trying to piece together last night’s events while concentrating on the route to work one tube stop at a time. Entering the office, Larry was literally collared by Mr Humpty, “Harry my boy! Just in time!” he bellowed, veering Larry into a fully occupied and sickeningly sober board room. The board meeting! Thought Larry, swallowing hard as he realised he’d forgotten to update the sales figures when the results came in yesterday!

As Mr Humpty stormed into his welcome speech, Larry had an unusual moment of enlightenment and surreptitiously opened a web browser on his blackberry just out of view. Slowly copying the sales figures from his email to the management portal with a shaking hand, Larry vowed to hunt down the sadist who booked the Christmas Party on a Thursday, before a board meeting!

“My dear Harry,” Larry froze like a rabbit in headlights, “would you care to explain these figures to the board?...”. As Larry clicked the save button, updating the sales table with exemplary performance figures, he piped up, “erm… you might have to refresh the page… it does that some times…” Scowling dubiously, Mr Humpty refreshed the management dashboard, currently projected onto a large screen for all to see. “By god that’s why I hired you Harry!” praised Mr Humpty as the graphs leapt up into the green to a resounding aaahhh from the board.

Standing up carefully, Larry caught the eye of all round the table, “Now I believe these figures speak for themselves. If you don’t mind, I have some urgent business to attend to…”. Not waiting for an answer but catching an enthusiastic wink from Mr Humpty, Larry strode out of the room, down the hall and into the toilet to repent for the sins of last night’s merriment and debauchery.
